The Dig Kids: An Urban Farming Program” for Youth is in its second year in 2012. Youth will be paid a stipend to “Farm” the Everett Hodge Center children’s garden and the Van Buren Street playground in 2012. Applications will be available for youth on Monday, April 2nd, 2012.
Kingston - Created by the Kingston Land Trust in partnership with Kingston Cares (a program of Family of Woodstock), The South Pine Street City Farm and with the support of Kingston Parks and Recreation Department, ‘The Dig Kids” is charged in working with Kingston youth to grow food, learn farming practices, encourage entrepreneurship, beautification, pride and good health through hands on farming experiences.
In its second year, youth “Garden Mentors” will be selected through an application process and farm throughout the four month program (May-August) and paid a stipend to work two days a week after school and in the morning during the summer months transforming the Children’s Garden at the Everett Hodge Center on Franklin Street and the Van Buren Street Playground raised beds in Midtown, Kingston. Youth must be 14 – 21 to participate. This year several “Jr. Gardener’s” 13 or younger will be selected to be ‘mentored’ throughout the program.
In addition to growing vegetables and tending the gardens, “The Dig Kids” will learn culinary skills, visit farms and sell some of their crops to the community under the stewardship of Farmer Clark who also tends the South Pine Street City Farm in the city of Kingston.
Applications for youth will be available on Monday, April 2nd 2012 through Megan Weiss of Kingston Cares in her office located at the Everett Hodge Center on Franklin Street in Kingston. Up to seven youth will be selected and hired.
