Standards and Practices

The Kingston Land Trust is a member of the Land Trust Alliance (LTA), a national organization that works on behalf of land trusts to increase the pace and quality of land conservation by advocating favorable tax policies, training land trusts in best practices and working to ensure the permanence of conservation in the face of continuing threats.

The Kingston Land Trust follows the LTA’s Land Trust Standards and Practices, which provide comprehensive guidelines for the responsible operation of a land trust. The Kingston Land Trust also follows all Indicator Practices as defined by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.  These practices are designated by the Land Trust Alliance and indicate the land trust’s ability to operate in an ethical, legal and technically sound manner and ensure the long-term protection of land in the public interest.

In 2012, Samuel Stokes, an analyst for the Land Trust Alliance, conducted an assessment of the Kingston Land Trust’s fundamental strengths as an organization. The results of this examination revealed that the KLT is in great shape to accomplish all of its tasks, while remaining within the guidelines of its standards and practices to best aid the community in its goals to protect and preserve open space.
