Good morning and thank you for joining us to share this historic moment on a most appropriate day – Earth Day, April 22nd 2009, for the groundbreaking of Kingston City Hall’s Victory Garden.
Almost three years ago, community gardens in the City of Kingston became a mission of a group of citizens living in the active Ward 9 district. Through their research and hard work, a path was forged and an idea set in motion that would help to create a higher quality of life for those living here through the work of community gardens. More than 50 people attended this morning’s groundbreaking ceremony at Kingston City Hall of the installation of a “Three Sisters” Victory Garden on the west side of the building.
Rebecca Martin, chair of the Kingston Land Trust’s Garden Committee and founder of the Kingston Victory Garden Project, presided over the event, which included comments from Mayor James Sottile and an assistant attorney general for New York State. The Earth Day ceremony culminated with Sottile, Martin and several high school students, who are participating in the garden project, laying the final handfuls of topsoil into the eight-foot by eight-foot raised bed. The construction of the raised bed for the Victory Garden at City Hall couldn’t have been on a better day. Under sunny skies, volunteers of the garden committee of the Kingston Land Trust prepared the bed, installed cedar logs and mixed topsoil with manure and compost to ready the site.
Rebecca Martin, director of the Kingston Land Trust and chair of the garden committee, said the design of the garden is perfect for the “Three Sisters” theme of corn, squash and beans being planted. Continue reading First Phase of Victory Garden Done
