“The Galley Community Garden” located on the front lawn of the Queens Galley organizes its first official work party on Sunday, May 29th from 10:00am – 3:00pm. Material donations are being sought to help the project get underway that will initially support four families in Uptown Kingston to grow their own food in 2011.
Kingston, NY - The Queens Galley with the support of the Kingston Land Trust are set to launch a new community garden on the front lawn of the Queens Galley, 254 Washington Avenue in Kingston. Uptown residents have come together calling the garden space “The Galley Community Garden” charged in working with citizens to create a shared space in the uptown area who live in apartments or homes without suitable yards to have a place to grow healthy, local food for their families.
Garden steward Brendan Merritt is asking for donations between now and Sunday, May 29th when their work party is scheduled from 10:00am – 3:00pm. Volunteers will be fed at lunchtime by the Queens Galley. Items requested include soil, spruce, fir or cedar wood for raised beds and plants or seeds to help the group get underway. All donations can be dropped off in the rear of the Queens Galley kitchen (see list below). Currently, there are four garden plots with the potential for more on the lawn and in the back of the Queens Galley where there were once raised beds. The group also plans to grow flowers and cooking and medicinal herbs throughout the landscape.
