Kingston – On Saturday, July 13th 2013 at 9:00 a.m. the Rail Trail Committee of the Kingston Land trust are organizing a clean-up of a section of the proposed Kingston Point Rail Trail. Volunteers are invited to help clear a section of the old Ulster & Delaware rail bed that runs from Kingston Point to midtown Kingston. The Kingston Land Trust is working with the City of Kingston to develop this abandoned rail bed into a scenic urban rail trail.Volunteers should come prepared wearing boots since there are wet areas, gloves, bug and tick guard and long pants and long-sleeved shirts. The work will involve cutting and moving brush and general trash. Volunteers should bring water bottles and are requested to bring loppers or other brush clearing hand tools if they have them.

Among other purposes, the Ulster and Delaware railroad line used to carry New York City vacationers from ferry boats arriving at Kingston Point into the Catskill Mountains.

This section of the rail line runs from midtown Kingston to the Rondout. It will eventually connect to a network of rail trails extending throughout Ulster County. When completed this trail section will allow users to travel from midtown Kingston to the Hudson River with only a three percent grade throughout the 1.5 mile trail. Rail trails are created on abandoned railroad lines and are ideal recreational amenities for people of all ages and abilities because they are nearly flat, relatively wide, and have excellent visibility.

This is one of a series of Saturday morning cleanups that the Kingston Land Trust has organized. The clean-ups will throughout the summer and fall. Dates will be posted on the website www.kingstonlandtrust.org.
